We took off Sat morning on our Surlys ( 2CCs and 1 LHT), and headed for Chain O'Lakes State Park in Indiana. It was a nice 70 mile ride, except for the last 7 (all hills and very low on water). We camped and had a great time. The ride back was fantastic. Our bikes were great and we didn't forget anything. Pulling a trailer for 140 miles in 36-hours was pretty tough. I noticed it on the hills and some drag on the flats. Panniers might have been a little easier. But it was nice to have things easily accessible and organized. I think for a couple of days the trailer was good. If I were going for much longer, I'd likely use panniers.
